These three pieces are all that survive from a silver bead necklace found by Thomas Bateman in 1846. These were found inside a wooden box with the rich female burial at Cow Low.

The Anglo-Saxons were fond of jewellery. Gold jewellery was particularly popular with the richer members of society. They also used silver for objects like these. They are simpler in design than some of the gold examples. From this, we can suggest that the Anglo-Saxons, like people today, regarded gold as the most precious material.
