Cross from replica Benty Grange helmet
Site name : Benty Grange
Site type : Burial site
Time period : Anglo-Saxon
Material : Silver; Metal
Object type : Grave goods; Personal item
Museum number : 1995.260
The cross on the replica Benty Grange helmet is based on the original. This was examined very carefully to see how it was made. The corrosion of the iron strip makes it very difficult to see the original clearly. Here the X-ray (shown top left) was crucial. The X-ray sees through the corrosion, showing the shape of the cross. Close examination with a magnifying glass also shows the join between the two pieces of the cross. With this information, it is possible to make an accurate replica. This is now ready to be fitted to the noseguard of the replica helmet.
