This is the smaller of the two flint axeheads found in the cist burial at Liffs Low barrow. This was excavated by Thomas Bateman in 1843.

The axehead is made of grey flint. It is chipped all over its surface, with the cutting edge polished.

It is a beautifully made example of the sort of stone axehead which is often linked with the Neolithic period. They are found all over the country. They may indicate where the first farmers in Britain lived.
