Painting of Thomas Bateman and son

Time period : Modern
Museum number : 1961.182

This oil painting shows Thomas Bateman and his son, Thomas William. It was painted in 1860 by Thomas J. Banks. He shows Bateman as a cultured Victorian gentleman.

The objects shown in the picture suggest some of Bateman's interests. His hand rests on a human skull, probably from one of the barrows he dug. Next to the skull is the Anglo-Saxon glass bowl from Cow Low. In the background is an antique dresser with pots and a statue on top.
