The Anglo-Saxon helmet from Benty Grange is the most famous object from Thomas Bateman's collection. It was excavated on 3rd May 1848. It is one of only four examples of Anglo-Saxon helmets ever found in this country. There are references to boar crested helmets in Anglo-Saxon literature and sagas.
A hundred years after its excavation, the helmet was examined and conserved at the British Museum. This provided details of the making of the helmet. These were used when making the replica in 1986.
