One of the beads from Galley Low

Dimensions : Diameter 1.5cm.

Site name : Galley Low
Site type : Burial site

Time period : Anglo-Saxon
Material : Glass
Object type : Grave goods; Personal item; Jewellery
Museum number : J93.711

The bead was found with other finds close to the top of the Galley Low barrow. The finds included other Anglo-Saxon material, as well as prehistoric objects and some human bones. This was all disturbed material, making it difficult to understand the history of the site.

We do not know when this barrow was first investigated. It was before Thomas Bateman's first excavations in 1843. The unrecorded work had disturbed several burials. One of these was the rich Anglo-Saxon burial. However, the presence of prehistoric material suggests that at least one earlier burial was also disturbed. Bateman's records are not detailed enough to reconstruct the history of the site.
